How to Write a Love Story

The love story is unique because unlike your vows, it is a personal story of you the events that lead-up to your very first few moments, feelings, dating, and inevitable engagement. And unlike your Maid of Honor and Best Man speech, it’s told only from the perspective that you can provide.

Don’t be overwhelmed. This should be a light task meant to give a high-level overview of you and your fiancé’s love. You might even have already started something similar on your wedding web page.

Do’s

  •  Write in the 3rd person.  Then, have a friend do a test read when you’re finished.

  • When and how you first meet. Your initial feelings.

  • Your first date

  • Key events – major moments like “I love you”, kids, and etc.

  • The proposal – Write out how the proposal went down, how it was kept secret (or if you knew), where it was, who was there. How you felt

Don’ts

  • Inside jokes. Your audience won’t understand it without context.

  • Inappropriate moments. Don’t upset grandma.

  • Irrelevant details. No need to share your exact coffee order that day – unless that somehow lead to your proposal.

  • Don’t worry about being funny or romantic. Not everyone has a crazy story, that’s ok. Be you.

July 2016 On the campus of Rutgers University in New Brunswick NJ, while in transition between classes, Michael ran into (literally) Kristi, spilling coffee all over each other. Quickly glancing at Kristi’s now Starbucks stained shirt, Michael took note of her Star Trek printed tee. A conversation was quickly sparked and the two bonded over their favorite show and planned a first date to see the newly released Trek film a week later. After many nights out and many more Netflix nights in, the two seemed inseparable. On November 23rd, 2019, in a packed house with all their friends secretly there under the disguise of Friendsgiving, Michael took a knee and proposed to the love of his life, Kristi. And now, on this day of April 20th, 2020, Kristi and Michael both said, “I DO”. Let’s welcome into the room for the first time tonight as husband and wife, Kristi and Jason!
